Welcome to Iskwahtem (Cree word for doorway)
"Iskwahtem -- the threshold over which one must pass in order
to enter into the adventures of the Great White North."

Iskwahtem. . .
your portal to learning and experiencing nature.
- " Nature based experience addresses the Whole Person -- Spirit, Body, Mind and Heart." These are the findings of Richard Louv -- educator, Audobon Medal recipient and author of Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature Deficit Disorder.
- Researchers are presenting a growing body of evidence that supports Louv's findings. The evidence strongly supports the importance of nature to children' health and their ability to learn; connecting children to nature can send calmer, more curious, better-balanced children into the classroom.
- Canadian research found that teachers expressed renewed enthusiasm for teaching when they had time out in nature.
- Louv notes that "naturing education will be an enormous task" and that educators can not do it alone".
- Iskwahtem (doorway or portal) -- Pioneer Trail North Foundation's outdoor classroom will assist in this task. Iswahtem is an 80 acre parcel of land nestled in between the 1400 acres that make up the Half-moon Lake Natural Area and the Nature Conservancy of Canada's Ghost Horse Hills property. Here in this natural paradise, nature is doing all of the hard work. What is left is providing a student-friendly infrastructure. Much has been done. . .more is required. . .
